About Us

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, with regional operations in Houston, Denver and Newport Beach, Sequoia Golf manages a portfolio of high quality private, daily fee, and resort golf course facilities located across the United States. Today, Sequoia is one of the ten largest golf course operators with over 45 properties currently under management, as follows:

  • Atlanta – 25 courses owned/operated (18 courses added since 2003)
  • Houston – 8 courses owned/operated (added since 2007)
  • Denver – 2 courses owned/operated (added since 2009)
  • Third-Party Managed – more than 20 courses operated in multiple States (added since 2008).

As the founder of Sequoia Golf, Joseph L. Guerra remains its key principle today. Mr. Guerra has been a leader in the golf industry for almost three decades. Prior to forming Sequoia in 2003, he served as the co-CEO and President of a major golf management company for over 10 years, and was responsible for overseeing all operations, agronomy, business development, human resources, and legal activities.
 

Sequoia Growth & History

1965-2002

Canongate is founded by William Roquemore and the Patten Seed Company. Canongate I, the original Canongate club is completed. Canongate is originally founded with the ideal of providing membership based on value and variety. Six additional clubs subsequently estabilshed by founders.

2003

The Company’s founders sell Canongate to Sequoia Golf, which was formed in 2002 by Joe Guerra for the purpose of aquiring Canongate and other golf course-related investments.

2004-2006

Sequoia completes 10 aquistitions in Atlanta, bringing total owned clubs to 17. Year-end member count now exceeds 14,000, with over 650,000 total rounds played in 2006.

2007

Sequoia acquires The Woodlands Country Club (3 facilities) and the Oaks & Panther Trail resort courses located in the Woodlands, Texas, thereby establishing Sequoia’s initial platform outside of Atlanta, while also establishing a platinum membership (initiation fees of $27,000).

2008

Upgrade of the Peachtree City cluster completed and the Woodlands Country Club expansion initiated. Lake Windcrest and Magnolia Creek added to the Houston market. Currently own 25 facilities consisting of 531 golf holes.

2009

Sequoia Golf enters the Denver, Colorado market through purchase of Blackstone and Black Bear. Sequoia also diversifies into third-party management services and is quickly selected to manage 12 properties.

2010

Sequoia Golf expands its third-party management portfolio by adding an additional 10 properties. At the end of 2010, Sequoia owns or manages over 50 properties. Over 1 million rounds of golf played in 2010 at Sequoia facilities.

2011-2012

Sequoia Golf expands its management portfolio by adding Canebrake Country Club, The Ridges at Mountain Harbour, Fort Collins Country Club and also expands to the west coast with the addition of Rancho Vista Golf Club and Pauma Valley Country Club.

2013

Six courses are added to the management portfolio including Regatta Bay in Destin, Florida, Mill Creek Country Club in Seattle, Washington and The Royal Golf Group- consisting a cluster of four courses located in the Chicagoland area. In addition, Sequoia Golf purchases three high-end country clubs in the north metro Atlanta area – Atlanta National Golf Club, White Columns Country Club and Polo Golf & Country Club. Sequoia also signs 20-year lease on Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, California.
